H. Brent Patrick, born
in 1970 and a native of Jackson, Tennessee, is a partner with Smith
Cashion & Orr, PLC and concentrates his practice on construction law
and litigation.
Mr. Patrick received his Bachelor of Architecture
degree, Cum Laude, from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville in 1995
where he was a member of Tau Sigma Delta, Honor Society in Architecture.
While at Tennessee, Mr. Patrick worked as an intern on large commercial
and residential design projects for the architectural firms of Thomas,
Ross & Stanfill Architects, Cooper & Perry Architects and Design
Innovation Architects.
In 1998, Mr. Patrick obtained his Juris Doctor degree
from the University of Memphis, Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law. While
at the University of Memphis, Mr. Patrick received the Dean’s Award for
Academic Excellence in Trial Advocacy and was a member of Phi Delta Phi.
Following law school, Mr. Patrick joined Smith Cashion & Orr, PLC as an
associate. Mr. Patrick is a LEED® AP.
Mr. Patrick is currently a member of the Nashville,
Tennessee, and American Bar Associations. He is also a member of the
Construction Law Forum of the American Bar Association. Mr. Patrick is
also a founding member of the Tennessee Association of Construction
Counsel and the Defense Research Institute and a member of the Board of
Directors for the U.S. Green Building Council, Middle Tennessee Chapter.
Mr. Patrick has co-authored several publications related
to construction law including: Tennessee Construction Law; Construction
Lien Law in Tennessee, and Change Orders in Tennessee, Lorman Education
Services; Law of Payment Bonds, Chapter 5, Notice Requirements for Bond
Claims, published by the American Bar Association, Tort & Insurance
Practice Section; and State by State Analysis of Legal Issues Affecting
Architects, Engineers, Contractors and Owners, Tennessee Chapter, Aspen
Publishers.
Mr. Patrick serves as a guest lecturer for the
“Construction Law and Contract” class at Vanderbilt University’s College
of Engineering. Mr. Patrick has also lectured on construction law issues
before the Tennessee Fire Sprinkler Contractors Association, the
Tennessee Department of Transportation concerning minority business
enterprise issues relating to the construction industry, and on behalf
of Lorman Education Services.
