Gregory L. Cashion,
born in 1957 and a native of Fayetteville, Tennessee, is a founding
partner of Smith Cashion & Orr, PLC where he devotes his practice to
construction law and litigation.
Mr. Cashion earned his Bachelor of Science degree in
Civil Engineering, Magna Cum Laude, from the University of Tennessee at
Knoxville in 1979 where he was a member of the Tau Beta Pi and Chi
Epsilon engineering honor societies. While earning his Civil Engineering
degree, Mr. Cashion worked as a co-op engineer for CFW Construction
Company, Inc. in Fayetteville, Tennessee.
After graduating from the University of Tennessee in
1979, Mr. Cashion worked as a Project Manager for Charles Blalock &
Sons, Inc. of Sevierville, Tennessee and as a structural engineer for
United Engineers & Contractors at TVA’s Watts Bar Nuclear Plant. Mr.
Cashion is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Tennessee.
In 1983, Mr. Cashion earned his Doctor of Jurisprudence
degree from the University of Tennessee School of Law. After graduating
from law school, Mr. Cashion practiced law with the Nashville law firm
of Manier, Herod, Hollabaugh and Smith until co-founding Smith Cashion &
Orr, PLC in 1998. While at Manier, Herod, Hollabaugh & Smith, Mr.
Cashion devoted the majority of his practice to construction law and was
managing partner of the construction law section for several years.
Mr. Cashion is an Adjunct Professor for Vanderbilt
University, College of Engineering. He teaches construction law and
contracts as a part of the Construction Management Graduate Program. He
has earned the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited
Professional (LEED AP) Credential.
Mr. Cashion is currently a member of the Nashville,
Tennessee and American Bar Associations (Construction Law Forum). Mr.
Cashion is also a member of the National Society of Professional
Engineers and the Tennessee Society of Professional Engineers. Mr.
Cashion is a certified mediator and arbitrator with the American
Arbitration Association.
Mr. Cashion is a member of the Governing Committee of
the ABA, Forum on the Construction Industry. He is currently the Chair
for the Membership Committee and was the program co-Chair for the
Newport, Rhode Island Fall Meeting held on October 25-26, 2007. He was
the Division 5 Chair from 2005-2007.
Mr. Cashion is currently a member of the Tennessee
Association of Construction Counsel. Served on the Executive Committee
of the TACC for 6 years and was President of TACC in 2009.
Mr. Cashion often provides lectures on construction law
before the Tennessee Bar Association, the Nashville Bar Association, the
Associated General Contractors, the Associated Builders and Contractors
and the Tennessee Road Builders Association. In addition, he has
presented numerous construction related seminars for Lorman Education
Services and the National Business Institute.
Mr. Cashion has co-authored several publications
including Chapter 43 of Fifty-State Construction Lien and Bond Law
published in 1992 by Wiley Law Publications and Chapter 10 of
Fundamentals of Construction Law published in 2001 by the American Bar
Association Forum on the Construction Industry. Mr. Cashion also
authored “Checklist for Enforcing a Miller Act Claim,” Construction
Lawyer, Volume 16, No. 4, October 1996, published by the American Bar
Association Forum on the Construction Industry.
