Matthew J. DeVriesMatthew DeVries, born in 1971 and a native of Albuquerque, New Mexico, is an attorney with Smith, Cashion & Orr PLC, and concentrates his practice on construction law, employment law and commercial litigation.

Mr. DeVries earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from The American University in 1993, and he obtained his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Richmond School of Law in 1998. While at law school, Mr. DeVries served as Executive Editor of Law Review, was inducted into the Order of the Barristers, and received the International Academy of Trial Lawyers Award for Outstanding Advocacy. Following law school, Mr. DeVries clerked with the Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals of Virginia.

Mr. DeVries began practicing construction law and commercial litigation at Wickwire Gavin PC in 1998 in Vienna, Virginia. Mr. DeVries’ construction experience includes representing numerous owner-developers of power plants throughout the country in defending claims, providing claims preparation and contract administration assistance to general contractors, and representing numerous clients in mechanic’s lien actions in state court and Miller Bond claims in Federal court. His commercial litigation experience includes representation of local business owners and individuals in corporate, employment and other business litigation matters.

Mr. DeVries has written numerous articles on construction-related issues, including property damages caused by subcontractors, waiver of subrogation clauses, fraud claims in construction disputes, delay damages claims, and the risks involved in contracting with the Federal government. In addition, Mr. DeVries has given presentations on construction law in Indian Country, project delivery systems, and the basics of construction law principles.

Mr. DeVries was admitted to practice in Virginia in 1998, the District of Columbia in 2000, and Tennessee in 2006. He is also admitted to the United States Supreme Court; United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, the Federal Circuit, and the D.C. Circuit; the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia; and the United States District Court for the District of Columbia.
