Robert J. Carter, born in 1980 and a native of Fayetteville, Tennessee, is an associate with Smith Cashion & Orr, PLC, and concentrates his practice on construction law and general civil litigation.

Mr. Carter received a Bachelor of Arts in American History with Honors, summa cum laude, from Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tennessee in 2003. While at Cumberland University, Mr. Carter worked as an intern for The Tennessee General Assembly, Calendar & Rules Committee and Representative Clarence “Pete” Phillips. He also participated in Varsity Football and was the President of the Pi Gamma Mu honor society.

In 2006, Mr. Carter obtained his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Memphis, Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law. While at the University of Memphis, Mr. Carter received the Dean’s Award for Academic Excellence in Alternative Dispute Resolution. During law school, he also clerked for a local criminal defense attorney where he gained invaluable litigation skills.

Following law school, Mr. Carter joined Smith Cashion & Orr, PLC, as an associate. Mr. Carter was admitted to the Tennessee bar in 2006. Mr. Carter is a member of the American, Nashville, and Tennessee Bar Associations. Mr. Carter is currently a member of the Tennessee Association of Construction Counsel.

Mr. Carter has gained valuable experience and practical construction knowledge with regard to all phases of construction and construction management by way of Shelby Contracting, Inc. in Huntsville, Alabama and CFW Const. Co., Inc. in Fayetteville, Tennessee.
